Bot protection and application-level abuse controls

Edge and bot controls help manage automated requests before expensive application work occurs. Account-aware checks then evaluate customer actions and benefit eligibility. Build the boundary so that a challenge result does not become a substitute for the business rule.

Which requests should reach the application?

Begin with the protected action, the policy that defines eligibility and the system that can apply a response. Establish who owns a disputed decision before adding new evidence.

Evidence worth collecting

  • Request and automation context
  • API and browser behavior
  • Downstream account actions and customer completion

A practical control sequence

  1. Inventory public endpoints and the expensive actions they expose. Include APIs and non-browser clients.
  2. Check the exact bot product and plan; a challenge widget and a full bot-management service have different scope.
  3. Monitor legitimate crawlers, accessibility and completion. Keep an alternate path for customers affected by a challenge.

Watch the boundary

A bot verdict describes a request or activity pattern. It does not by itself establish whether several customer accounts belong to the same eligible claimant.

Measure customer completion, confirmed outcomes, review effort and missing results within the same cohort. A rise in blocked activity alone does not show that the business is better protected.
